Johannesburg – Less than a week before the start of the Oscar Pistorius trial, police investigators have gone to the US to get crucial information from key electronic devices.
The Times reported that three senior police officers, including the head of detectives, Lieutenant-General Vineshkumar Moonoo, have flown to Apple headquarters to get information from Pistorius’s iPhone. They also apparently have other electronic devices with them. The information police are seeking relates specifically to SMSes and Whatsapp messages, a source told the newspaper.
The Sunday Times reported at the weekend that Pistorius was allegedly surfing porn sites on one of his cellphones on the night that he shot his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
The last-minute attempt to retrieve information comes as bureaucratic red tape stalled requests for data for months. Forensics experts yesterday said that crucial evidence includes blood-splatter analysis, ballistics and cellphone messages. Last week, documents apparently detailing the state’s case against Pistorius were leaked to the media, Sapa reported.
The document details how the State will use statements from neighbours, forensic analysis of the scene, ballistics evidence and the postmortem result to attempt to prove Pistorius is guilty of murder.
There is also apparently evidence that security guards at the luxury complex where Pistorius lived phoned him after the shooting to see if everything was in order. He allegedly failed to report the shooting incident to them, telling them everything was fine. — News24
