MUTARE. – The establishment of an international airport in Manicaland is moving closer to reality with the announcement of a feasibility study scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2025.
This initiative comes in response to persistent calls from the travelling and business community, as well as local tourism stakeholders who have long advocated for enhanced air transport infrastructure in the province.
Earlier this year, a site was scouted in Mutasa District, which has been identified as a suitable location for the proposed airport.
Deputy Minister Sacco said the project was of significance, highlighting that it represents a crucial step towards improving connectivity and promoting economic growth in the region.
“An international airport is no small feat, and several factors need to be taken into consideration. It is not a project that can be done and concluded overnight,” he said.
He acknowledged that the feasibility study would evaluate vital elements such as environmental impact, land use, economic viability, and community engagement.

“This is a mega project that needs a lot of time invested in it to come to fruition. It has a lot of impact on the host community and these are factors that will need to be put into consideration before any meaningful development takes place. This is one of the priority projects that has been tabled for Manicaland and we anticipate feasibility studies to commence within the first quarter of 2025,” said Deputy Minister Sacco.
The comprehensive assessment aims to ensure that the project aligns with both local needs and sustainable development goals. The feasibility study will also include consultations with local communities to ensure their voices are heard throughout the planning process. This approach is aimed at addressing any concerns regarding land acquisition and environmental preservation, fostering a sense of ownership among residents.
