Government’s plans to rehabilitate and widen Seke Road on a 16km stretch that runs from the Velvet area to ZRP Dema are now at an advanced stage after the road was handed over to a local contractor.

This comes after the Government announced that the reconstruction and widening of the 66,5km Harare–Seke–Zvipadze Road, starting from Harare Main Post Office to the Ten Miles area in Marondera, is set to commence this month.

Officials from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development have since handed part of the road to a local contractor for work to begin.

In a statement, the ministry said, “Site hand-over is currently underway for the rehabilitation and widening of Seke Road, covering a 16km stretch running from Velvet to ZRP Dema.

“This key infrastructure upgrade underscores the Government’s continued efforts and firm commitment to modernising the country’s road network, improving traffic flow, and enhancing road safety.”

Recently, pothole patching was underway along the road, from the Unit H turn-off to Makoni Shopping Centre in Chitungwiza.

Plans are also underway to widen the road and construct dedicated bus lanes following an increase in fatal road traffic accidents along the stretch.

In August last year, 17 people died at Hunyani Bridge along Seke Road in an accident involving a commuter omnibus and a 30-tonne haulage truck.

That same month, more than 20 people were injured when a commuter omnibus travelling from Ziko to Harare’s Central Business District burst a front tyre and veered off the road near Chinhamo Service Station.

The injured were rushed to Chitungwiza Central Hospital, where they received treatment, with about seven people sustaining serious injuries.

In a recent interview, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona said the Government will start widening the road that connects Harare to its most populous dormitory town, Chitungwiza.

“We are going to have a dedicated bus lane, and my team is seized with that,” he said.

“The roas is going to be widening again, we will make sure we have more lanes in an expressway right up to Makoni Section and straight up to Ten Miles.”
