PLATINUM Queens won the Premier Netball League (PNL) launch tournament after beating Gold Reef 26-16 in the final at White City Stadium on Saturday.
Eighteen teams previously affiliated to the Rainbow Amateur Netball League (RANL) and the Super League took part in the tournament.
The Platinum Queens went home with a trophy and gold medals, while Gold Reef got silver medals.
Freedom Tivagere, PNL chief executive officer, was they were happy with the level of competition and are confident that the newly formed PNL will develop netball and create a competitive environment. Tivagere said they will move with speed in to make up for lost time due to the Covid-19 induced break.
“We are living in difficult times in the wake of Covid-19. Netball has been greatly affected by the lockdowns and closure of sports in the country. The pandemic did not even spare our homes, workplaces and every facet of our lives.
Let’s continue to fight by observing all the prevention protocols,” Tivagere.
“We are very happy to have had the PNL launch tournament. Today marks the beginning of the PNL league games.
We are going to have unusual timeframes to allow league games to fit in the time we have. PNL aims to bring competitiveness and netball development that will see teams competing locally, regionally and internationally. Our netball shall develop into a vibrant sport industry by working with partners to bring the best out of societies.”
He said PNL will provide an effective administration that will inspire confidence in the sport, as the board of governors will play an oversight role and help steer the direction PNL takes.
PNL is now working on “necessary protocols” before the start of the awaited league games. — @ZililoR
