The football fiesta will run until February 4 featuring 18 teams – Seke, Zengeza, Glen View, Budiriro, Highfield, Glen Norah, Warren Park 1 and 2, Warren Park D, Mbare, Sunningdale,/Arcadia, Kuwadzana, Dzivarasekwa, Mufakose and Kmbuzuma.
Today Mabvuku will take on Tafara at Mabvuku Ground while Epworth battle it out against Epworth North in Epworth.
Harare Chapter chairman, Tendai Makoni, said the aim of the tournament was to broaden their fan base in the capital. The idea is to recruit more members and at least broaden our support base in Harare.
“The winners will get prizes and it’s going to be one-off matches in all areas. It will also involve women,” said Makoni. Committee member, Edmund Vudzijena, said FC Platinum were sponsoring the competition.
“FC Platinum Football Club are sponsoring the event. We want to boost our support base in Harare. The team itself is operating from Zvishavane but we believe it’s a team for the country.
“We don’t want people to perceive it as a team from Zvishavane but a team that came in to develop soccer.
“We want to create awareness. We know we have got supporters but we want this whole thing to be systematic. We want to understand our fans better and the team. Without fans there is no football team.
“This is going to be more of a social event with players from the community.
“We just thought that we cannot talk about football without having the actual thing.
“We can say this is a pre-season fiesta for people to gear up for this year’s league season.
“We want to ensure that there is interaction between the supporters and the team,” said Vudzijena.
Vudzijena said they were hoping to move to other provinces as they continue with their campaign.
“We are starting with Harare but we are going to spread to other provinces,” said Vudzijena.
However, Vudzijena could not reveal the total sponsorship package for the tournament.
