FORMER Hwange Football Club midfielder, Oscar Lungu, who now turns out for Zambia’s Kwabwe Warriors, got the shook of his life when he received his playing licence 20 minutes before the end of their league opener against Nakambala Leopards recently.
The pint-sized Lungu (27) joined Kabwe Warriors, a club that is also home to former FC Platinum and Shabanie Mine striker Nelson Maziwisa, in January.
“I have never experienced such kind of disorder. Our coach (Tenant Chilumba) had included me in the 18 member squad that was supposed to face Nakambala Leopards. However, I could not manage to make my debut appearance as I had no player’s licence,” said Lungu He added: “I was naturally disappointed as I had to watch 70 minutes of the game from the terraces alongside my teammates Benjamin Ochan (Uganda), Emmanuel Okutu (Ghana), Felly Seka (DRC) and Levinson Zulu
(Zambia) who also did not have their licences. We only received our licences with 20 minutes to go and that’s when we were allowed to make our way to our team’s substitutes bench. Initially, only two players were sitting on the bench.”
Warriors, who are due to face Red Arrows this afternoon, went on to lose their match against Leopards 1-0.
“We will be playing against Red Arrows and I’m very much optimistic that we will get a positive result. I’m also confident that this time around I will get game time since my player’s licence issue has been solved,” said Lungu. He was part of the Hwange squad that represented Zimbabwe in the 2012 Caf Confederations Cup campaign alongside Nichrut’s duo Farai Vimisai and David Boriwondo, FC Platinum’s duo of Winston Mhango and reigning Soccer Star of the Year finalist Rodwell Chinyegetere.
Asked on how he was feeling on reuniting with Chilumbwa, Lungu said he was feeling on top of the world.
“It always feels great to reunite with our mentor. He coached me at Hwange and I’m glad we have reunited in Zambia. It always feels great and I will always seek to do well for him and the club,” said Lungu.
Chilumba, a Zimbabwe’s 2011 Coach of the Year, is one of the celebrated former Chipolopolo players who missed the flight that killed all the members of the Zambian national soccer team that crashed off Gabon in April 1993.
Former Ngezi Platinum captain Patson Jaure recently completed his move to ambitious Zambian side Buildcon.
Jaure joined FC Platinum’s Nqobizitha Masuku and former Warriors first choice Tatenda Mkuruva.-@FungaiMuderere
