adminJOHANNESBURG. — Orlando Pirates duo Daine Klate and Senzo Meyiwa say the players are focused on winning the Caf Champions League title rather than what they stand to gain financially.
The Buccaneers meet Egyptian side Al Ahly on Saturday night in the first leg at Orlando Stadium, and Klate said bonuses are the last thing on their minds.
“At this club, there is a culture. We know if we go hand over the trophy to the chairman, we know what’s going to happen afterwards. He’s going to reward us kindly — that’s been the culture of this team.
“There has never been a day at this team that anybody was talking about bonuses before a final or how much we are going to get. It is always about delivering the trophy first and we know the chairman will reward us kindly. We don’t have to ask him for the money, so we are comfortable,” Klate says. Meanwhile, Meyiwa is in unison with Klate, adding that the players are focused solely on the match. “We know that at every club if you win something, the chairman gives you something. For us, we know if we win the trophy the chairman will give us something we will never forget,” he adds with a laugh.
Meyiwa concludes: “It is in our contracts; if you win something, you get something.”
If Pirates win the trophy, they will be guaranteed a cheque of US$1 500 000, which is approximately R14 700 000 in today’s exchange rate, with the runners’ up taking home R10 million.
And heading to the much-anticipated Caf Champions League final first leg encounter this weekend, Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa says the only way to beat Al Ahly will be to give them all the respect they deserve.
The 1995 champions will battle for the continental crown against the Egyptian giants at Orlando Stadium on Saturday night. — Kickoff.com.
