‘Players’ welfare is key to strong club’

In an interview yesterday, Dumisani described the players’ welfare as key to maintaining a strong side that can stand its own and win things.
“We have to come together and have one mindset that players and the team’s legacy are the most important components that bring us together at the club.

“If we plan ahead, renew contracts well in advance by making timely financial decisions as to the distribution  of whatever cash is available and have them in mind, then we can go places. Success has dominated the past  three decades of the club’s existence, we need to  return to that by keeping quality players and retaining a good technical team at all levels,” said Dumisani.

He said he enjoyed a good rapport with players, something that he had noted as lacking in the current executive.
Dumisani, who has previously travelled to Egypt and Kenya with the club at his own expense, said the culture of road shows was something he wanted to see return.
“When the team is playing well, there will be a lot of people accompanying the team creating a home away from home friendly atmosphere for the boys. This can inspire them to good results when they note that they have to do it for their fans,” said Dumisani.

Having previously served in the club’s structures in the Harare chapter with the likes of board members Isaac Mlilo and Thomas Ngwenya, Dumisani said now that he was at home, he felt he could even do a better job.
Mabhena said he had no running mate as he did not want a fragmented Highlanders.

“I am prepared to work with whoever wins for one Highlanders. A situation where there are factions even among members and executive does not bode well for the club. My wish is to see everyone associated with Highlanders working together for the good of Tshilamoya,” said Dumisani.
He said with proper packaging the Highlanders brand can still attract meaningful sponsorships and not small donations.
