MOTORISTS and passengers have pleaded with the Harare City Council to install traffic lights and humps at the Mabvuku turn-off.
This follows a spate of accidents at the spot.
Residents said traffic lights, humps and grids would help lessen the occurrence of accidents at the spot.
“I wish the Council heeds our pleas for traffic lights and humps as many lives have been lost at this junction. People are dying every month due to unregulated traffic flow here,” said a motorist, Elija Gurupira.
Another motorist, Mariga Nyabezi, emphasised the need for traffic lights.
“Traffic lights are useful as they indicate when one should stop and go.
“Although some do not respect traffic lights, we still have people who are upright and do the right thing,” he said.
An accident involving a Toyota Hiace and a truck claimed one life and left several others injured at the turn-off at around 7pm on Friday.
Witnesses said drivers of both vehicles failed to give way to each other, resulting in the collision.
The spot has also claimed lives of pedestrians crossing the main Mutare Road.
School kids also find it difficult to cross as it is a wide busy road. Harare City Council spokesperson, Innocent Ruwende, said installation of traffic lights at the junction is part of the local authority’s plans.
“It is part of the roads’ plan and we are planning to install robots this year,” he said.
