Please, stay in your lane!

IT is without doubt that the coronavirus has caused untold suffering globally, Zimbabwe included, and we need all hands on the deck to win the fight against this invisible enemy.

Thousands of lives have been lost world over while millions have been infected.

Back home, we have lost at least four lives due to the disease, while the number of infections continues on a gradual rise.

We pray those infected get healed and the affected are consoled.

Similarly, while everyone has to come on board with all sorts of contributions or ideas towards the fight against the pandemic, it is always advisable that we stick to our areas of expertise.

The number of artistes, or should we say aspiring singers and actors, that have mushroomed over the past weeks is just amazing.

Talk of sudden realisation of talent!

Whether it is out of love to spread messages on the pandemic or this is just to save pure selfish interests, only they and God knows.

But the poor quality, lack of depth and absence of vocal lucidity in most of the songs produced easily prove a number of these guys are ultimate opportunists.

Mercenaries to be precise.

Some certainly want to use this crisis as a launch-pad of their supposed careers, while for others it is just a means to an end — tapping into donor funds.

However, radio stations and the sole national television channel must save us from this torture through “quality control” of these songs or jingles.

This also goes for some of the skits whose themes, execution — acting and production wise —  leaves a lot to be desired.

Most of them irritate, to be frank, yet they are supposed to be educating and entertaining (edutainment).

Only standard and deserving productions should be accommodated on national channels.

The rest can make use of their social media platforms to spread the products.

Actually, we have better Covid-19 skits and songs that are circulating on social media than on official channels.

Even when the so-called “big names” come with sub-standard productions, please turn them away so that you get better products next time.

We are also vocally gifted yet we have never been tempted to go and record a Covid-19 song.

Instead, we stick to what we know best, and yes, you guessed right.
