PLUMTREE Chiefs beat Amaganyani 5-4 after a penalty shootout in the final of the Plumtree Bakery and Supermarket Soccer Cup Tournament’s first edition in Plumtree on Sunday.A priceless save by goalkeeper Taurai Muranganwa during the penalty shootout was enough for Plumtree Chiefs to lift the title after the two teams were tied one all after full time.
Charles Muzenda’s spectacular 22nd minute goal put Amaganyani in the lead in the first half. Thaluso Ndlovu slammed an equaliser in the second half after Amaganyani’s defence was caught napping.
Luck was not on the side of Kombani Africa Tournament Cup holders, Plumtree Soccer Academy after their hopes of lifting the cup were thwarted when the team lost 5-6 to Plumtree Chiefs in a penalty shootout in the semi-finals.
Academy were thumped 2-0 by a 10-man Plumtree Rollers who settled for third position.
Plumtree Rollers were reduced to 10 men in the first half after Sebastian Matematandi was sent off for a crude tackle on a Plumtree Soccer Academy player.
In the social teams’ final, Plumtree Social Club penalty takers rose to the occasion to win 3-1 against Loxion Culture.
Two consecutive penalty misses from Loxion Culture players after a goalless draw in regulation time were enough for the team to give away their category’s trophy.
Plumtree border team, Western Queens, emerged champions in netball defeating seven other teams.
At the end of 25 games that were played on a round robin basis, Western Queens and Tigers were both sitting on 18 points.
A goal difference of plus 10 was enough for Western Queens who scored 142 to secure the trophy.
Organiser of the tournament, Reuben Chirwa expressed delight over the large turnout of supporters.
“The tournament has been a success as it went as planned. Soccer lovers from Plumtree came out in large numbers and we never expected to record such a large crowd. This tournament is just one of the many projects that we have lined up for the local community,” he said.
Plumtree Rollers manager, Archford Zhanje who could not stomach defeat, blamed his team’s loss to the use of Zifa Southern Region Division One soccer club Bulawayo Jumbos players by Amaganyani.
Other participating teams received vouchers and training material.
