The woman identified as Buhe Dube, of 1214 ZBS location, was in the company of her boyfriend.
The two had sought shelter under Matole Bridge.
Matabeleland South police acting provincial spokes-person Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya confirmed the incident, which he said occurred at about 5pm.
“On Tuesday at about 5.30pm, Dube proceeded to Matole River with her boyfriend who is 17 years old.
“While there, there was a heavy downpour and they decided to seek shelter under the bridge. The river started flowing and the two were swept away. The boyfriend managed to swim and escaped after being swept for a few metres from where they were hiding,” said Asst Insp Ngwenya.
He said Dube’s body was recovered about 1,5km away from the bridge.
“The body was taken to Plumtree Hospital for a post-mortem and investigations are still underway,” said Asst Insp Ngwenya.
He appealed to members of the public not to be close to rivers when it is raining.
“Since we are already in the rainy season, we appeal to the public to desist from seeking shelter under bridges in case of rains. People should also desist from attempting to cross flooded rivers as they might endanger their lives. We encourage people to check water levels before attempting to cross any river,” he said.
Residents of Plumtree were left shocked by the heavy rains.
