Plumtree Town’s Fire and Emergency Services have urged residents to use official department contact numbers in emergencies instead of calling personal acquaintances within the department, warning that informal calls delay response times.
To enhance emergency service delivery, the town council purchased two new ambulances in August this year. This move came after an old ambulance, which had exceeded its lifespan, remained non-functional for three months and was costing the municipality high maintenance fees. The new vehicles are seen as a more cost-effective and reliable solution.
“We strongly advise residents to call the responsible departments directly in an emergency rather than contacting someone they know personally within the office. This informal chain of communication slows down our rapid response to save lives and property,” said Mr. Busani Mthethwa, the lead firefighter.
The municipality also highlighted its commitment to maintaining a skilled technical team that participates in monthly workshops to stay updated on the latest skills and technology.
“We communicate with residents through the council’s information-sharing platforms and are currently working with service providers to establish a toll-free emergency hotline,” said Town Secretary Mr. Thembelani Nyoni.
While the toll-free line is still being set up, residents are encouraged to contact the emergency department at 0771 380 327 or 0715 780 047.
Emergency services can also be reached by phone or in person at municipal stations located at Dingumuzi Shopping Centre, Dingumuzi Clinic, and along Plumtree Town’s central road.
