PLUMTREE residents are on edge after the escape of convicted rapist and murder suspect Cabangani Mike Mathe early on Saturday 15 November. Mathe, who had been serving an eight-month sentence and awaiting further court appearances, managed to slip out of Plumtree Prison, leaving many in the community feeling uneasy.
Reports indicate that Mathe used a hacksaw to cut through the window bars before climbing over other inmates to reach freedom. He then crossed a section of razor wire and exited through the officers’ residential gate. The swiftness of his escape has prompted police to question two Plumtree prison officers and temporarily seize their phones while investigations continue.
