Speaking during the handover ceremony, PM Tsvangirai bemoaned Gove-rnment’s lack of support for the physically challenged and those living with HIV/Aids.
“Since the attainment of independence in 1980, there has been no significant commitment on the part of the Government in addressing issues that affect disabled people daily. This neglect has brought condemnation on our people with the moral fibre eroded to an extent where there has been unprecedented political violence even against disabled people,” he said.
Acting Labour and Social Services Minister Nelson Chamisa said Govern-ment had over the years introduced several measures to alleviate the plight of disadvantaged members of society.
Government, he said, established free medical treatment facilities in Government health institutions where vulnerable groups are guaranteed health access.
“Basic Education Assistance Module have for years helped in the reduction of school drop outs due to economic hardships, public assistance scheme is also ensuring that vulnerable groups receive monthly allowances to enable them to purchase basic commodities,” he said.
Minister Chamisa said the fight against HIV/Aids was not Governme-nt’s responsibility alone.
