PM utterances: women’s groups under fire over

failing to denounce PM Tsvangirai for saying he survived an accident that claimed the life of his wife Susan in March 2009 because he was the main actor.
The PM boastfully said main actors in films do not die.
He said this last Wednesday while addressing Government officials, family and MDC-T members during a memorial service for his late wife in Harare.
Said the PM Tsvangirai; “Ask yourself that in that accident, had it been me who died and she had survived, what would have happened?
“One of the fundamental things is that the main actor does not die if the film is still on.”
It is against this background that Mrs Dongo said local women groups had abdicated their responsibility of championing women rights to promoting politicians that enable them to source more money from donors.
“I was very angry when I read the story. I was not expecting a man of his stature to reduce the death of his wife to a film. Its unfortunate . . . It’s a disaster,” she said.
Mrs Dongo said PM Tsvangirai had no respect for women in this country, adding it was shocking that no women rights groups bothered to challenge him.
She said most of the groups received funding from the same paymaster with the MDC-T leader, adding that they were afraid of “biting the hand that feeds them.”
Mrs Dongo said this was not expected from a PM who was aspiring to be the President of this country.

“He is saying had he died . . . So what? Does it mean that Susan could not have stood up for Presidency? This is a challenge to all women in this country and the people should take this matter seriously unless they are just in business to make money out of the misery of other women.
“I have noticed that the ideologies of some women groups have deviated and they are now ignoring women issues,” she said.
Some of the women organisations are so quick to make statements in local and foreign media accusing other parties of abusing women’s rights.
“However, they remain mum when the perpetrators are from the MDC party.
“If a woman activist hears anything that offends women we expect them to stand up and analyse these statements made by male chauvinists.
“The problem is actors can do anything that is not real. Actors come and go so we do not want ‘Actor President.’ I will not have an actor President because they do some strange things,” said Mrs Dongo.
Some women lobby groups declined to be associated with the story.
A director of a leading organisation who requested anonymity said; “What value does our attack on Mr Tsvangirai bring. Maybe he was just throwing a humorous statement during the function.”
This is not the first time these organisations have remained mum when PM Tsvangirai has been involved in cases that border on abusing women.
When the PM ditched his second wife Locadia Karimatsenga in favour of Elizabeth Macheka after being associated with many local and foreign women, all the organisations maintained a deafening silence.
