The Words Matter monthly show is fast becoming Bulawayo’s launchpad for poetic talent, giving up-and-coming voices the chance to step out of the shadows into the spotlight.
The June edition of the poetry and expression platform returns tomorrow, offering a rare blend of spoken word, dance, music and open-mic freedom from 5pm.
Words Matter celebrates the power of the spoken word in tackling social issues, telling personal stories and uniting communities through creativity.
At the heart of the show is WeCre8te Afrika, a poetry collective of eight passionate artists led by Sox The Poet, who launched the group in November 2023. Since its inception, WeCre8te Afrika has been a consistent opening act at every Words Matter Show since the event’s launch in October 2024.

Their mission? To create space for emerging voices, and this month’s edition does just that, placing 19-year-old Silethemba Dube, whose stage name is “Letty”, in the spotlight.
“We host poetry shows every month, each with a unique theme. Our goal is to use poetry as a tool for social change. Through workshops, classes and other programmes, we help young people express themselves, build confidence and discover their voice,” said Sox the Poet.
Letty, a founding member of WeCre8te Afrika, is set to deliver a performance themed Before We Were Fire, We Were Wind, a metaphor for the group’s evolution.
“It’s about change and elevation. The piece reflects where we started and how far we’ve come as artists. Growth is the message,” she said.
In an exciting twist, Letty said she will collaborate with the No Name Dance Crew for a spoken word and dance fusion, exploring a poetic love story.
“I’m thrilled about the performance with No Name. It’s a new concept, poetry meeting movement in a way we haven’t done before.”
Despite Letty being the featured artist, she was quick to note that the entire group would share the stage.
“Everyone in WeCre8te will perform. We’re fusing poetry, music, dance and even a touch of comedy to keep things fresh and exciting. We’re promising fireworks,” she said.
Comedian, Mbongeni Ignatius is also expected to bring his signature storytelling flair. An hour open mic session will close off the night, offering newcomers a chance to step into the spotlight.
