Matabeleland North spokesperson Inspector Billie Dube confirmed the incident, which happened in the Lusulu area.
“Three children from Lucas Mudenda homestead died after eating mushrooms collected from the bush. The children died last Saturday,” said Insp Dube.
He said the children were taken to Lusulu Clinic after consuming the mushrooms.
“On 14 December, one of the now deceased children aged 10 collected mushrooms from the bush and brought them home. She prepared the mushrooms as relish for the family.
After supper, the three children started complaining of stomach pains and were rushed to Lusulu Clinic at about 11pm,” said Insp Dube.
He said the three minors died in the early hours of Saturday.
He said the now deceased’s parents also ate the mushrooms and only suffered mild pains.
Insp Dube said a post-mortem was waived.
He urged members of the public to be very careful when collecting mushrooms as some of them are poisonous.
