Police have appealed to members of the public who were duped by land barons who illegally parcelled State and council land to come forward with information to help investigations. This comes after progress in the investigation of 15 suspected land barons who were arrested over the weekend for illegally allocating land has been slowed down as complainants are not coming up to report.
Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said members of housing cooperatives such as Ebenezer, Bhora Mughedhi, Musha Mukuru and Tinotenda Baba should report to the CID Law and Order section at Harare Central police station.
“We are appealing to the public to come and report persons they gave money meant to acquire stands on these undesignated lands,” she said.
“All members of housing cooperatives who had their houses demolished and were duped by illegal land barons and settled on land unlawfully should not hesitate to come forward and furnish the police with information as they were prejudiced.”
Clifford Chimusoro, Stanley Mugadza, Innocent Chakandinakira, Driver Kasambarare, Pardon Manyima, Dominoco Mark and Daniel Nyamuno who were some of the representatives of the listed housing cooperatives were granted bail when they appeared in court on Monday facing fraud charges.
Snr Asst Comm Charamba said corrupt officials who were involved in the deals will be brought to book for abuse of office as they parcelled out the land without authority
