Police are appealing to residents and Harare City Council authorities to install street lights, flood lights, burglar bars at windows or doors at their premises.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said anyone intending to visit relatives late at night should give prior notice where possible.
The call follows armed robbery cases reported in Westgate and Mabelreign that left a security guard dead at Hallingbury Primary School.
“It is in the interest of local residents to know the local police’s contact number and neighbours for swift mobilization of emergency services and the Police,” said Comm Nyathi.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police assures the residents in Mabelreign and Marlborough suburbs, Harare that comprehensive deployments have been effected immediately to curtail robbery and other criminal acts.
“In this regard, the police urges residents to cooperate with police by reporting any suspicious movements, unknown people roaming aimlessly or seated on road culverts or drainage.
“This include suspicious vehicles either parked or moving in the area whether displaying registration plates or not.
“The public should feel free to report suspicious movements or criminal acts on National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631, Harare Operations on (0242) 748836, Support Unit Reaction Team on 0714 336 924 or WhatsApp on 0712 800 197,” said Comm Nyathi.
Honourable George Mashavave, who is the Member of Parliament for Mt Pleasant, yesterday visited Hallingbury Primary School authorities and Mabelreign Police Station and assured residents enough security.
“We lost our security guard, we have been saddened by the circumstances, and we are sorry about this,” said Hon Mashavave.
“I visited the school and spoke to school authorities.
“Police have assured residents enough security during the night.
“They promised an increased police visibility to make sure residents are safe.
“We are urging residents to tighten their security and remain vigilant,” said Hon Mashavave.
Armed robbers recently pounced at an orphanage home and school in Good Hope, Westgate and went away with more than US$30 000 cash, at Marlborough High School where they stole security guards cash and cellphones leaving residents living in fear.
