POLICE in Chegutu have arrested an independent candidate in the Chegutu Ward 1 by-election for allegedly violating election rules and regulations after allegedly defacing his rival Zanu PF candidate’s posters.

It is alleged that Tonderai Elisha Dauisi (33) was arrested on Thursday afternoon by Pfupajena Police Station officers for tearing Cde Gift Konjana’s posters.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) acting Mashonaland West spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Belinda Nyazire, professed ignorance on the allegation matter, but sources privy to the development said the arrest followed defacing of several campaign posters belonging to Cde Konjana.

“We will issue a statement once we have all facts,” said Ass Insp Nyazire.

Cde Konjana confirmed that some of his posters had been defaced but did not implicate anyone.

Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) announced that the Chegutu Municipality Ward 1 by-election will be held on February 21.

Another independent candidate, Charles Birisawu is also eyeing the seat which fell vacant following the death of Citizens for Coalition Change (CCC) Clr Kimpton Mkombwe in a mine accident late last year.
