THE Zimbabwe Republic Police has arrested four suspects in connection with violent disturbances which erupted during a Premier Soccer League match between Hardrock FC and Dynamos FC at Chahwanda Stadium in Kwekwe on Sunday.

In a statement, ZRP Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the arrest of Shingirai Chivavare (34), Matthias Taderera (43), Tavakuda Nyoni (46) and Emmanuel Dube (50) in connection with acts of violence and public disorder which resulted in the match being abandoned in the 80th minute.

Commissioner Nyathi said the suspects were part of a group involved in violent clashes after supporters from both teams allegedly hurled missiles at each other, invaded the pitch and engaged in fighting.

“Seven supporters sustained injuries during the disturbances and were admitted to Kwekwe General Hospital in stable condition.

“Property damage was also recorded, with stadium infrastructure, including turnstiles and perimeter barricades, vandalised during the skirmishes,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

He said police are also investigating circumstances which resulted in nearly 5 000 supporters remaining outside the stadium at the start of the match, with some later forcing their way into the venue after damaging infrastructure.

According to Commissioner Nyathi, the supporters who gained entry into the stadium contributed to the violence witnessed during the encounter.

Commissioner Paul Nyathi urged soccer authorities to ensure stadium seating capacity is not exceeded and tickets are pre-sold before matches to prevent stampedes and crowd disorder.

He said police will engage the Premier Soccer League administration and the Zimbabwe Football Association to ensure effective stadium administration and public safety measures are prioritised before matches commence.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges members of the public to exercise tolerance, discipline and responsible conduct during sporting events. The public is warned against engaging in violence, vandalism or any form of public disorder, as offenders will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
