TWO women have been arrested in connection with an alleged employment scam that targeted desperate job seekers in Harare, while police are hunting for the suspected ringleader, who remains at large.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the arrests followed investigations into a syndicate accused of defrauding job seekers by promising them employment opportunities.
The suspects, Clara Chiwashira (29) of Kuwadzana Extension and Chipo Masuka (22) of Rugare, were arrested on Friday.
Commissioner Nyathi said the alleged ringleader, Charles Chizimbe, popularly known as “Boss Kevy”, of Marondera, is still on the run.
The suspects allegedly swindled job seekers through a WhatsApp group titled “Job Opportunities,” which reportedly operated from an office at Barts House in Harare.
Police said 35 people have so far reported information that may lead to Chizimbe’s arrest.
“The police in Harare arrested two suspects in connection with cyber-related crimes,” Comm Nyathi said.
“The two and their accomplice who is still at large would lure job seekers by claiming they had jobs, including housemaids, till operators and other general work.”
He said victims were charged between US$400 and US$500, and were issued with receipts.
“About 35 victims have reported, and more people might have lost money through this. We are urging anyone who was affected to come forward and report.”
Investigations are continuing, and police are appealing for information leading to the arrest of the suspect at large.
In another case, Comm Nyathi confirmed the arrest of Melusi Pelile (35) in Budiriro on armed robbery charges, linking him to 31 counts.
Comm Nyathi said Pelile, a former uniformed force member who went AWOL, had been terrorising residents in Budiriro and Glenview since last year.
