POLICE CONCERNED OVER SURGE IN DROWNING CASES

POLICE are concerned over the increase in the number of young people who are drowning in Mashonaland West.

A Grade Seven pupil drowned while swimming in Chinhoyi recently.

Two girls drowned in the Tengwe River while fishing on Sunday.

Acting provincial police spokesman, Assistant Inspector Effort Chapoto, said:

“Drowning cases of juveniles are on the increase this rainy season and police are worried as precious lives continue to be lost, “ said Ass Insp Chapoto.

“More rain means more water in our dams and siltation which may trap anyone in the mud.”

Ass Insp Chapoto said the two girls downned at Ndiripo Dam, which is at Ndiripo Farm in the Tengwe area.

Ass Insp Chapoto said Kudzai Chitehwe,11, of Plot 34, Yolanda Madiro, 10, of Plot 3, and Talent Madiro,10, all from Ndiripo Farm were fishing at the dam.

He said Yolanda’s fishing rod broke and she plunged into the dam to try and retrieve it and drowned.

Ass Insp Chapoto said Kudzai tried to help Yolanda and she also drowned.

He said Talent rushed home and informed Kudzai’s uncle Christopher Chitehwe.

“Christopher Chitehwe and other locals proceeded to the dam and retrieved the bodies,” said Chapoto.

He said thetragedy was reported at ZRP Tengwe and the bodies to Karoi District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.

Ass Insp Chapoto said no foul play was suspected.
