EDUCATION and refresher courses are needed in every profession for efficiency, a top cop has said.
National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said this in his closing remarks at the Police Community Relations Liaison Officers (PCRLO) workshop in Harare.
“The gracing of the workshop opening ceremony by Commissioner General of Police Godwin Matanga and his deputies shows the seriousness the police command attaches to workshops and other learning opportunities,” said Ass Comm Nyathi.
“It is for the benefit of Zimbabwe Republic Police members with a view of enhancing performance at various levels.
“Anyone who keeps learning stays young and the greatest thing in life is to keep the mind young. It is clear that the development of human resource skills, especially those of public relations officers, is key for the success of any organisation, and ZRP is no exception.
“There is an unending need for public relations officers to frequently and religiously hone their expertise in order to function effectively in their roles as enhancers of interaction and mutual understanding between the police and its public,” he said.
Ass Comm Nyathi noted the need for a well-resourced and equipped public relations officer, both mentally and materially, since policing terrain was ever changing and volatile. Among the subjects covered at the workshop were police operations department expectations and related matters for 2023, awareness campaigns, customer care, conflict management, conflict transformation skills, tools of solving conflicts, management of complaints, image building, social media and policing, media relations, counselling and preparation for retirement.
Soon after the workshop, nine police officers from various departments, who graduated from the Midlands State University, presented themselves to Ass Comm Nyathi.
The graduates were Assistant Inspector Tafara Svikiro, Inspector Sisa Masengu, Assistant Inspector Vimbai Nyateka, Constable Tungamirirai Chigogo, Constable Webster Musingarimwi, Inspector Artinos Badza, Assistant Inspector Clever Mhlanga, Constable Alex Mawene and Sergeant Charles Hakutangwi.
