POLICE in Mashonaland West Province are facing an acute shortage of offices and accommodation, a situation that is affecting effective and efficient discharge of policing services in all six districts of the province. Briefing Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga during his visit to Chinhoyi recently, Senior Assistant Commissioner Felly Chikowero Mjanga said the province was expanding in response to new demographic patterns, but officers faced accommodation challenges.
“This growth has seen the establishment of a new police district and a number of police stations over the few past years,” said Senior Assistant Commissioner Mjanga.
“Some of these new establishments are experiencing acute shortage of office accommodation. Police stations such as Pfupajena, Murereka are situated in high density suburbs where they share one toilet with prisoners,” she said.
Snr Asst Comm Mjanga said police details in those two districts had pitched tents as makeshift offices for investigators.
“This affects both the security of criminal dockets as well as the safety of police officers especially during bad weather,” she said.
Snr Asst Comm Mjanga also said the Chegutu and Siakobvu police stations were using dilapidated buildings.
