POLICE have commended both soccer supporters and officers deployed for Sunday’s blockbuster Castle Lager Premier Soccer League clash between Highlanders FC and Dynamos FC at Barbourfields Stadium, describing it as one of the best-managed high-profile fixtures in recent years.
The highly anticipated encounter between the country’s two biggest football rivals ended in a 1-1 draw before a capacity crowd at Barbourfields Stadium.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) praised supporters from both teams for their discipline, cooperation and adherence to security guidelines, which contributed to the successful hosting of the match.
“The ZRP commends soccer fans for the cooperation and discipline they displayed during the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match between Highlanders FC and Dynamos FC at Barbourfields Stadium on June 21, 2026,” said the police.
The police also singled out officers deployed for the high-risk fixture for their professionalism and commitment in maintaining peace and order before, during and after the match.
According to the ZRP, officers demonstrated exemplary conduct in managing large crowds and ensuring the safety of spectators, players and officials throughout the event.
“The police officers deployed for the match showed professionalism and exemplary conduct in maintaining law and order. Their performance reflected both local and international best practices in the policing of high-profile soccer matches, contributing to a safe, secure and peaceful environment throughout the event,” said the police.
The commendation comes after concerns had been raised ahead of the encounter amid tensions surrounding Highlanders’ financial challenges and recent industrial action by players over outstanding payments.
Despite the build-up to the fixture and the intense rivalry that characterises meetings between Highlanders and Dynamos, the match proceeded without major incidents, with fans focusing on supporting their respective teams.
Barbourfields Stadium was packed with supporters who created a vibrant atmosphere befitting one of the country’s biggest sporting events.
The peaceful conduct of supporters has been viewed as a positive development for local football, which has in the past witnessed isolated incidents of crowd trouble during high-profile matches.
Police reiterated their commitment to ensuring safety at all sporting events and urged football fans to continue embracing peaceful and responsible behaviour whenever they attend matches.
“Cooperation between supporters, football authorities and security personnel remains critical in preserving the image of the game and ensuring that stadiums remain safe spaces for families and sports enthusiasts,” said the ZRP.
Sunday’s successful hosting of the Bosso-DeMbare showdown has been hailed as a demonstration that football rivalries can be celebrated passionately while maintaining peace, respect and sportsmanship.
