POLICE in Marondera have launched a manhunt for suspects who fatally assaulted a man whose body was found lying by the roadside near Cherutombo Business Centre on Sunday morning.

It is believed that Jani Jokonya (43) had a misunderstanding with some people on his way from drinking beer at Cherutombo shops, and they beat him to death.

The reason for the misunderstanding is still unknown.

Police spokesperson for Mashonaland East Province, Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi, confirmed the incident.

“It is reported that on May 31, 2025, at around 9 pm, the now deceased Jokonya was drinking beer in KZ night club, Cherutombo in Marondera in the company of Ray Matika (40), Kudzai Kanogocheka (31), Biggie Tambo (39) and Barbra Machaka (41) before they parted ways at around midnight,” he said.

“On June 1, 2025, before 1 am, a juvenile (12) heard people quarrelling near their gate and he peeped through the window and saw four people who were having an altercation.

“He reportedly watched for about a minute before he retired to bed. On the same day, around 5 am, he heard from his co-tenant that there was a body of a man near their gate.” “The deceased’s body was reportedly lying face down. A report was made to the police.”

Insp Chazovachiyi said investigations were in progress.
