Police hunt for woman linked to newborn baby’s murder in Harare

Online Reporter

The police have launched a manhunt for a Harare woman, Ireen Pamela Govati, who is wanted in connection with the murder of her newborn baby in Hopley.

The incident occurred on December 8 last year at a house in Hopley Zone 6 when Govati allegedly gave birth to a baby boy and placed him in a 20-litre plastic bucket under her bed.

The baby was discovered by Govati’s 12-year-old daughter and niece after they heard the child crying.

According to the police, Govati then took the newborn to her tenant, Rejoice Mapfumo, who allegedly grabbed the baby by the legs and flung him twice onto the ground, killing him instantly.

The two women then buried the body in a shallow grave.

The two children reported the crime to the police on the same day, leading to Mapfumo’s arrest.

However, Govati remains at large.

Police have urged the public to assist with any information on Govati’s whereabouts through the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631, WhatsApp 0712800197, or the nearest police station.
