POLICE have launched a manhunt for Tranos Taurai Muzanenhamo, who is wanted in connection with a string of fraudulent SIM card replacements and hacking that has cost victims a combined total of over US$17 000 and ZIG 30 million.
The suspect is accused of using advanced social engineering and identity theft to bypass mobile network security, enabling him to illegally access bank and mobile money accounts.
He also allegedly hijacked the victims’ WhatsApp accounts, then exploited their networks by requesting cash from contacts, generating further illicit profits.
In a statement, National Police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the case.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is appealing for information which may assist in locating Tranos Taurai Muzanenhamo, who is being sought in connection with several cases of fraudulent SIM replacements and hacking involving US$ 17 009, 50 and ZIG 30 665 912,30,” he said.
“The suspect allegedly gathered personal information about the victims, such as their names, phone numbers, through various means like phishing, data breaches, or accessing public records.
“He used social engineering tactics to bypass security questions. Subsequently, he would then contact the victims’ mobile service provider, impersonating the victims before requesting a SIM card replacement.”
This stolen information, Comm Nyathi said, would then be used to execute the core of the fraud.
“Once the SIM swap had been approved, he would activate the new SIM card, resulting in the deactivation of the victim’s phone service and unauthorised access to their personal data,” he said.
“As a result, the suspect withdrew cash from the victims’ mobile account wallets and banks through digital banking.
“Further, he would take control of the victims’ WhatsApp accounts before requesting cash from the victims’ contacts.
“Anyone with information which may lead to the arrest of the suspect should contact the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 70 3631 or WhatsApp on 0712 800197 or on website, www.zrp.gov.zw or report at any nearest Police Station.”
