POLICE here are campaigning against politically-motivated violence ahead of the harmonised elections on July 30.
Speaking during the launch of the programme yesterday, provincial community relations and liaison officer Inspector Charity Mazula said political parties should learn to co-exist and respect each other’s views.
She said police would not hesitate to arrest perpetrators of political violence regardless of political affiliation.
“We appeal to you parents to desist from fanning political violence during the elections period,” said Insp Mazula.
“We encourage members of the public to report all forms of politically-motivated violence to us so that the culprits are brought to book.
“As police in Masvingo, we are not going to hesitate to arrest all perpetrators of violence regardless of their political persuasion. We expect you to vote in peace and we urge you to be tolerant of each other’s political views.”
Insp Mazula said it was very critical to observe and maintain peace during the election period.
She said there was no need for people to fight over divergent political views.
“As police, we are there to protect you prior, during and after the harmonised elections,” she said.
Insp Mazula said they were also concerned with the increasing number of road traffic accidents around the province.
She said motorists and other road users should observe road traffic regulations to avoid the unnecessary loss of lives.
Insp Mazula discouraged members of the public to avoid use of pirate taxis and others involved in criminal vices on local and major roads.
“We urge you not to use unregistered public transport like the Fun Cargos, Toyota Vitz, which are used as pirate taxis,” she said.
“Let us help each other to reduce road carnage and criminal activities on our roads to save lives.
“It has come to our attention that most of these accidents are caused by these unregistered public transporters and in some instances these are not insured.”
