In a significant development in Nkulumane, Bulawayo, three prominent supporters of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) — Khumbulani Mpofu, Butho Ncube, and Meluleki Nyoni — were recently arrested by local police amid allegations of organizing unsanctioned political gatherings.

The trio is part of a close-knit group of four friends, all sons of war veterans who historically held active positions within the ruling Zanu-PF party but have since shifted their allegiance to the opposition CCC.

According to a police source who spoke on condition of anonymity, “The three individuals were detained following intelligence reports that they were holding meetings without the required permits. These gatherings were deemed illegal under the current regulations. Qiniso Nkomo, the fourth member of the group, has evaded arrest and is currently in hiding. Our officers are actively pursuing leads to locate and apprehend him.”

The group, known for their vigorous campaigning for the CCC, has reportedly been involved in mobilizing support during the recent election cycle, which saw the opposition making significant inroads.

A relative of Qiniso Nkomo shed light on the escalating pressure faced by the family. “The Nkomo family home was recently attacked and vandalized in what appears to be a politically motivated act of intimidation. After this distressing event, Qiniso, along with his wife Nontokozo Ncube and their children, felt compelled to go into hiding to protect themselves,” the relative revealed.

The relative further expressed deep concern over the safety and wellbeing of the family, emphasizing the emotional toll of the ongoing harassment. “This has been a very difficult time for them. The attacks and constant police visits create an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. We urge the authorities to respect their rights and ensure their safety.”

Community members in Nkulumane have voiced mixed reactions to the arrests. Some residents support the police actions, citing the importance of law and order, while others claim the arrests. As the search for Qiniso Nkomo intensifies, the CCC has yet to issue an official statement regarding the arrests or the ongoing police operations in Nkulumane. The situation remains fluid, with many watching closely how the authorities will proceed in the coming days.
