A police assistant inspector and a constable were marooned when Munyati River flowed over its banks and flooded Musena Police Base on Monday night.

The two duty officers, Assistant Inspector Manyanye and Constable Marangira, made distress calls after their offices and property, including dockets, were soaked in the water.

In the darkness, the extent of the flooding was unknown, but when the water levels subsided on Tuesday morning, the two were able to leave the base.

District Development Coodinator, and district CPU chair, Mr Vafias Hlabati, said the two officers are now safe.

“I have been in a meeting with the officer-in-charge who told me the water levels have subsided,” he said.

“We have also been contemplating relocating the police base to a safer place and will also be consulting with other stakeholders for the resources.”

Mr Hlabati said police were still assessing the damage and making sure the soaked dockets and other important documents were salvaged.

“I met the officer-in-charge of the district who indicated to me that they were still assessing the damage,” he said.

In other flooding news, residents of Isaiah Park suburb in Zvishavane had flood water invade their homes after heavy rains on Monday night.

Zvishavane town council secretary Mr Tinoda Mukutu said several families had their property soaked while roads were damaged.

“We are still assessing the extent of damage,” he said.

“The most affected suburb was Isaiah Park where residents lost property after it was soaked in the water.”
