A POLICE officer based in Gweru was on Wednesday arraigned before the courts for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend after she refused to withdraw an earlier case of assault against him.
Constable Denford Nyaumwe, 24, of 73 Nkenyani road in Mambo, and stationed at Monomotapa Police Station, appeared before Gweru magistrate Vimbai Makora facing a charge of assault.

He pleaded not guilty and was remanded out of custody to November 11 on $50 bail.

For the state, Blessing Neta told the court that on October 11 this year, Nyaumwe went to his girlfriend Skhangezile Sigiyo’s house.

He asked her if she was still keen on having a matter she reported earlier at Gweru Central Police brought before the courts.

The court heard that Sigiyo did not reply.

Her silence angered Nyaumwe who then kicked her on the chest and assaulted her with clenched fists on the face.

Sigiyo fainted and Nyaumwe pushed her under the bed and walked away.

She sustained some serious injuries on her left leg.
