POLICE Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba has unveiled the rebranded Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) National Highway Patrol team.

The initiative includes the deployment of five high-powered double-cab Ford Ranger vehicles aimed at enhancing road safety during the festive season and beyond.

Each vehicle will be manned by officers equipped with body worn cameras, forming part of a comprehensive electronic traffic management system designed to ensure safer roads.

In his remarks at the launch on Wednesday, Comm-Gen Mutamba said it was important for the community to be involved in issues relating to road safety.

“Please utilise these new National Highway Patrol vehicles to make reports whenever you encounter our teams on the roads,” he said.

In his 2025 festive season statement on crime and road safety, Comm-Gen Mutamba highlighted the risks associated with increased travel and socio-economic activities during this period, which typically sees a rise in road traffic accidents and criminal activities.

To combat these challenges, the ZRP is intensifying its policing efforts nationwide.

“We have deployed officers nationwide to set up roadblocks, conduct traffic blitzes, and execute stop-and-search operations.

“Motorised, foot and cycle patrols will be intensified in areas such as central business districts, residential zones, industrial areas, and leisure centres.”

He advised people to ensure their homes are securely locked when leaving and to arrange for someone to monitor their properties.

Comm-Gen Mutamba reminded all Zimbabweans that road safety is a collective responsibility. Motorists are urged to adhere strictly to speed limits, avoid overcrowding their vehicles, and plan their journeys wisely.

“Drivers should minimise night travel, as many fatal accidents occur during this time due to visibility issues,” he stressed.

To ensure road safety, the police will impound unroadworthy vehicles.

He also discouraged travellers from using pirate taxis and mushika-shikas.
