Police probe girl (14)’s rape, murder case

A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped and impregnated by a man in the Nyamandhlovu area, Matabeleland North Province, last year before she was married by the alleged suspect.

The teenage girl then gave birth in June this year.

However, it is reported that the couple and a neighbour teamed up and poisoned the newly born baby to death.

They then reportedly  secretly buried the baby in their yard before it was later exhumed and reburied outside the yard. Police have since launched an investigation into the rape and murder case.

Nyamandhlovu is a rural district located roughly 40km north-west of Bulawayo, in Matabeleland North Province.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the case. “Police in Nyamandlovu are investigating circumstances surrounding cases of rape and murder which occurred at Zimdabule Village in September 2020 and June 2021.

“In September 2020 one of the suspects raped the victim aged 14 who became pregnant and gave birth to a baby in June 2021. The suspect and his wife as well as their neighbour, administered an unknown poison to the newly born baby. The body was then buried within the yard. It was later exhumed and reburied outside the homestead. Investigations are in progress,” he said. The three suspects are assisting police with investigations.

Last week, Hatirarami Momberume, accused of impregnating the 15-year-old girl who recently died while giving birth at an apostolic sect shrine in Marange, appeared in court charged with murder while the girl’s parents were also arrested in Kwekwe for defeating the course of justice.

Momberume (26), who works at a farm in Kwekwe, is also being charged with being intimate or performing indecent acts with a young person.

Last Friday, police detectives picked the deceased’s father, Edmore Machaya (45) and his wife Ratchel Mabika (36) at Garibold Farm in Kwekwe amid indications they had lied about the girl’s date of birth.

They were taken to court where they were denied bail.
