THE Zimbabwe Republic Police is ready to provide maximum security at any given time and will do likewise during the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games that kick off tomorrow.Ten countries from the Sadc region will be in the country until December 15 competing in eight different disciplines.
In an interview yesterday, national police spokesperson Charity Charamba said the police were adequately prepared for the Games.
“Our police officers will be deployed to all the Games’ facilities, we will also intensify our preventive patrols within the city centre and surrounding areas,” said Charamba.
The police spokesperson said details would be deployed at the Bulawayo Polytechnic College which is the Games’ Command Centre, Hillside Teachers’ College (Games Village where all the athletes and officials are housed) as well as all the eight venues for the Games.
She said 24-hour road blocks would be mounted along the Harare-Bulawayo road.
“We’re adequately prepared for these Games and our visiting athletes, officials as well as everyone in general should be assured of maximum safety,” said the police spokesperson.
More than 2,000 officers, in uniform and civilian clothing, will be on duty throughout the duration of the Games.
President Mugabe will officially open the games on Sunday afternoon.
