Police ready to stamp out political violence: Chihuri

In a speech read on his behalf by the officer commanding crime in Matabeleland South Assistant Commissioner Loveness Ndanga in Gwanda at the conferment of ranks to 53 police officers, Commissioner General Chihuri warned potential perpetrators of violence that police would deal decisively with them and there would be no sacred cows.

“I implore all police officers to remain resolute and vigilant against agents of neo-colonialism and destabilisation. As police officers, we remain committed to creating a conducive environment favourable for free and democratic elections,” he said.

He said the police were aware of people planted to discredit the organisation and the elections and urged the public to complement police efforts by playing an effective role in maintaining the legitimacy of elections.

“We are quite aware of detractors whose hypocritical attacks and unwarranted vilification are aimed at discrediting the organisation and the country at large particularly now when the nation is anticipating holding of a referendum and harmonised elections. I thus urge all peace-loving citizens to come forward and keep partnering with the Zimbabwe Republic Police in the fight against crime,” he said.

Commissioner General Chihuri urged police officers to keep upgrading themselves so they keep abreast of the new sophisticated brand of criminals.

A total of eight police officers promoted from the rank of inspector to chief inspector were conferred with their new titles at the event.

They included Matabeleland South police spokesperson Chief Inspector Tafanana Dzirutwe. A female officer, Assistant Inspector Tholakele Sibanda, was among 10 assistant inspectors who were promoted to the rank of inspector.

Sixteen police officers were promoted to assistant inspectors from the rank of sergeants while 19 constables were made sergeants.
