Police have reported a decrease in road traffic accidents during the recent festive season in comparison to the same period in 2022/23.

The statistics cover the period from December 15 last year to yesterday.

According to the police, a total of 2 228 road accidents were recorded during this period, which is a decrease from the 2022/23 festive season’s 2 689 accidents.

Fatal accidents dropped from 118 to 98, but the number of injured people increased from 509 to 786.

There were 138 fatal car accidents, a decrease from 170.

National Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, cautioned drivers to be careful while driving, and to avoid crossing flooded rivers and bridges.

He also asked the public to report any recklessness on the roads.

“The ZRP reiterates that drivers should be cautious on the roads and not cross flooded rivers and bridges to curb drowning incidents.

“The public is advised to report errant drivers on the roads at their nearest police station. The ZRP will continue to enforce road rules without fear or favour,” said Asst-Comm Nyathi.
