POLICE have arrested two people for allegedly smuggling 200kg of dagga into Zimbabwe from South Africa through the Beitbridge Border Post.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Chiratidzo Dube confirmed the arrest of Benjamin Mutezo (26) from Bulawayo and Jelous Moyo (39) from Beitbridge.

“On 20 July 2025 at around 1430 hours, detectives from CID Beitbridge received a tip-off to the effect that there was a Honda fit transporting contraband of dagga from Forit area, Beitbridge to a house in Yellow Houses, Beitbridge.

“Detectives way-laid the said Honda fit registration number AEY 1813 and intercepted it. Accused Two was driving the motor vehicle whilst Accused One was seated at the front passenger seat. A search was conducted leading to the recovery of dagga packed and wrapped in black and white plastics stashed in carrier bags. The accused persons were arrested and escorted to the police station,” she said.

Insp Dube said, upon being questioned, Mutezo revealed that he had bought the dagga from South Africa for sale in Bulawayo. He then hired his accomplice to transport the dagga to his uncle’s house in Beitbridge. Insp Dube said the accused persons also revealed that they had already delivered some dagga at the house.

They led the detectives to the said house where a search was conducted and dagga weighing approximately 100 kilogrammes was recovered. Insp Dube said in total the recovered dagga weighed about 200kg.
