POLICE intercepted 630 kilogrammes of dagga with a street value of $630,000 which was destined for Botswana.
The four men behind the contraband fled when they were intercepted at a bushy area in Madabe area in Mangwe District.
The dagga was packed in 21,5kg sacks.
A police officer said the four men were intercepted yesterday at around 1AM before they reached their illegal crossing point.
The officer who refused to be named, said the police at Madabe Police Station received a tip off from a member of the public.
“The officers at Madabe received a tip off that there were four men who were dropped by a vehicle in a bushy area in Madabe area. The men were heading for Botswana and it appears they were communicating with their accomplices in Botswana to help them transport the load,” said the police officer.
He said police proceeded to the area but the gang fled leaving their consignment behind.
Smuggling of goods is common in Bulilima and Mangwe Districts.
Asked to comment, the Matabeleland South acting provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Philani Ndebele, said he had not yet received a report on the recovered dagga.
