Police recover gold worth nearly US$1.6m

POLICE in Harare have recovered 15,7kg of gold worth nearly US$1,6 million, which was about to be smuggled out of the country.

The gold was found hidden in a Toyota Prado Land Cruiser. Three suspects have since been arrested in connection with the case.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest in a statement.

“The ZRP confirms that a tip was received on August 19, 2025, that gold was about to be smuggled out of the country whilst hidden in a Toyota Prado Land Cruiser,” he said.

“Detectives from CID Minerals, Flora and Fauna Unit tracked the vehicle leading to the arrest of three suspects and the subsequent recovery of 15,7 kilogrammes of gold valued at US$1 568 860.

“The gold has since been taken to Fidelity Gold Refinery, Msasa. Investigations are in progress.”
