LAW enforcement agents are geared to decisively deal with pirate taxis – especially during the bustling festive season – to ensure public safety on the roads, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi has said.
Speaking during a police and media engagement forum organised by the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Manicaland Chapter in Mutare this evening, Commissioner Nyathi warned pirate taxi, commonly referred to as mushika-shika, operators to desist from carrying passengers.
“Pirate taxis are not licensed and insured to carry passengers intra-city or intercity. Their operations are illegal and police are geared to deal with that menace during this festive season and beyond,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
He said the police will be out in full force to enforce the law against errant drivers who flout road rules and regulations through reckless behaviour that endangers their own and others’ safety on the road.
Citizens, he added, must also play their role and be responsible by shunning pirate taxis.
Commissioner Nyathi reiterated that there is no room for corruption in the force, as officers found offside will face the consequences of their actions.
He urged the media to continue playing a key role in raising awareness among both motorists and the public to prevent road carnage.
