POLICE have tightened security ahead of Independence Day celebrations tomorrow, warning members of the public against the possession and use of illegal firearms as the country prepares for nationwide festivities.

Police officers will be on high alert with intensified patrols, stop-and-search operations and surveillance in major cities and surrounding areas to ensure public safety.

This comes amid growing concerns among the public over the circulation of unlicensed weapons, particularly firearms, prompting law enforcement agencies to take a firm stance in curbing any potential threats.

National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said the security measures were part of a broader strategy to maintain law and order during one of the country’s most significant national events.

“We want to assure the nation that the Zimbabwe Republic Police is fully prepared to provide adequate security during the Independence Day celebrations,” he said. “We have deployed officers across the country and intensified patrols to guarantee the safety of all citizens,” said Comm Nyathi.

He urged members of the public to cooperate with the police and remain vigilant, stressing the importance of reporting suspicious individuals or activities.

“We are appealing to members of the public to report anyone suspected of carrying illegal firearms or engaging in criminal activities. Community cooperation is critical in ensuring that we have peaceful and incident-free celebrations,” he said.

Comm Nyathi warned that the law will take its course against those found in possession of unlicenced weapons.

“Let me make it clear that anyone found in possession of illegal firearms will be arrested and prosecuted without fear or favour. There is no room for lawlessness, especially during such an important national occasion,” he said.

Comm Nyathi added that police will also be monitoring other potential offences, including public disorder, reckless behaviour and substance abuse, which often increase during large gatherings.

“We are not only focusing on firearms, but also on maintaining general public order. Our officers will be monitoring gatherings to prevent any form of violence, disorderly conduct or criminal activity that may disrupt the celebrations,” said Comm Nyathi.

The police spokesperson encouraged citizens to celebrate responsibly and prioritise safety at all times.

“Independence Day is a time for unity and celebration. We urge everyone to enjoy the festivities responsibly, avoid engaging in unlawful activities and respect the laws of the land,” he said.

“We will remain on high alert throughout the holiday period to ensure that the celebrations are conducted in a peaceful, secure and orderly environment.”
