Police to bring violence perpetrators to book

involved in the violence that rocked Harare recently after MDC-T youths and vendors attacked policemen.
The attacks took place near Harvest House, the MDC-T’s headquarters.
Police spokesperson, Superintendent Andrew Phiri, said they were working hard to eradicate cases of violence that have risen of late, especially in Harare.

“We have realised that the perpetrators have no regard for life and are using anything possible to target those they perceive as enemies,” he said.
“As police, when we attend scenes of violence, our priority is to disperse the perpetrators to prevent injuries and destruction of property.
“Our priority is to bring those responsible to book and in pursuance of that we try by all means to make follow ups and to arrest those identified as active participants in the violence.

“It is in that vein that we hope that members of the public will identify and give us information on the whereabouts of those we have identified to be active in the violence that took place at Harvest House.”
Supt Phiri said anyone with information on the identities of the suspects should contact Detective Assistant Inspector Mudyirwa on 0712 794 829 or Sergeant Rego on 0772 915 998 or CID Law and Order on telephone number 753411 or any nearest police station. Six people, including two vendors and an MDC-T security official, have since been arrested in connection with the violence.

Supt Phiri said the police were still looking for those involved in violence that rocked Hatcliffe and Chitungwiza.
“We are still calling on members of the public with information on the incidences in Hatcliffe and Chitungwiza to come forward because we want to bring the perpetrators to book,” he said.
“As police, our maxim still remains zero tolerance to political violence.

“Police are on high alert to thwart any violence that might occur in future.”
The three political parties in the inclusive Government have organised a meeting of their leaders today to find ways to prevent political violence ahead of elections expected next year.

The meeting is a result of proposals by President Mugabe that Zanu PF’s Central Committee and the MDC formations’ national executive councils meet to stem violence incidences.
President Mugabe has spoken out strongly against violence on numerous occasions.
