Police warn Bulawayo school children against gang fights

THE Zimbabwe Republic Police in Bulawayo has warned school children to avoid engaging in public fights as the school closing day approaches.

Speaking during a safety campaign, Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, urged city schools to refrain from their usual practice of fighting as the term comes to an end.

“School will be closing on August 7, and it’s a habit for city schools in Bulawayo whereby when schools close, the likes of Milton, Gifford, Hamilton, Founders gather in the CBD and start bullying each other and practicing gang fights and having rallies around the city center and Haddon and Sly,” she said.

“Therefore, as the police, we are in full force on the ground and we do not want to see any form of gathering from school children,” she added.

The police spokesperson appealed to the community to help discourage these gang fights involving city schools.

“Chase them from town to home because that is where they are safe. One of the Gifford boys had a hand and leg fracture for the whole term because of these fights,” she said. “We also had a murder case at

Founders High School in the years back. Hence, we are calling upon all stakeholders to come up and disperse these children to their homes.”

She further emphasised that the police cannot be present on every street corner, so it is everyone’s responsibility to intervene and prevent these fights.
