POLICE have warned motorists to observe road rules and regulations and at the same time ensure that their motor vehicles are roadworthy to avoid accidents and safeguard lives during this Easter holiday.
National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba in a statement the police had a simple request for motorists: “Drive safely to arrive safely this Easter holiday.”
She said experience had shown that speeding, human error, misjudgment, overloading and defective motor vehicles contribute to accidents.
“With the Easter holiday upon us, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) would therefore, like to warn all motorists to observe road rules and regulations and ensure that their motor vehicles are roadworthy for carrying passengers and goods,” said Snr Asst Comm Charamba.
“Special care should also be taken to ensure that tyres are in good condition before embarking on journeys. We’re appealing to all motorists to drive safely during this Easter holiday.”
She said police would maintain a presence on all the country’s major roads and urged motorists to cooperate with police officers when stopped at road blocks in order to avoid any inconveniences.
“Police will be checking for various traffic violations, target stolen motor vehicles, minerals, criminals, cattle rustlers and drug traffickers,” said Snr Asst Comm Charamba. She said the ZRP would be working with the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe and the Vehicle Inspectorate Department to ensure an accident-free holiday.
“We implore owners of commuter omnibuses to employ drivers who are of the stipulated age, have all the requisite documents to drive public service vehicles and ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy. Be warned that police will impound all vehicles that are not roadworthy and take them off the road in order to save lives. Please cooperate with police as they discharge their duties,” said the police national spokesperson.
