The spokesperson for the province, Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo, yesterday said the police would not hesitate to arrest anyone who celebrates the New Year by destroying public property or making noise that would inconvenience other residents.
“There would be a heavy police presence everywhere and there are roadblocks in all major roads leading into the city. We want to warn miscreants who deface street signs, destroy public property, annoy other residents with noise or commit any crime, that they will spend the New Year behind bars,” said Insp Moyo.
He said there was a general increase of rape cases at this time of the year and appealed to residents to take precautions.
“Minors normally get drunk and become victims of gang rapes. In most cases they fail to identify the culprits because they would be in a drunken stupor. We appeal to parents to monitor their children and ensure they do not take alcohol.
“There has also been an upsurge in cases of women being raped while visiting outside toilets at night. Residents should avoid making such visits unaccompanied,” said Insp Moyo.-Chronicle
