A syndicate of counterfeiters is on the loose in Mashonaland West province, particularly in Chinhoyi, circulating fake US$100 notes.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a warning to the public to be vigilant when handling US dollar notes.
According to ZRP provincial spokesperson, Inspector Ian Kohwera, the syndicate comprises both male and female members who are targeting businesses in Chinhoyi.
“Police in Mashonaland West Province are worried about the circulation of fake US dollar notes in the province, particularly Chinhoyi town,” Inspector Kohwera said.
The counterfeiters are posing as genuine customers, approaching retail shops, service stations, beer outlets, and vendors with the fake notes.
The ZRP is urging the public to be cautious when handling US dollar notes and to report any suspicious transactions to the authorities.
This is not an isolated incident, as there have been reports of counterfeit currency circulating in other parts of the world.
In a recent case in Canada, an 18-year-old man was arrested for circulating counterfeit Canadian $100 bills.
The ZRP is working to track down the syndicate and bring them to justice. In the meantime, the public is advised to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
