TOUTS operating at an illegal Avondale rank along Leopold Takawira in the Harare Central Business District have been warned against habouring criminals.
The call was made yesterday by police in conjuction with Traffic Safety Council during an awareness campaign. The touts have been reported to be aiding pick pocketers by blocking the pedestrian crossing while loading Mishikashika.
Addressing touts and mushikashika drivers at corner Leopold Takawira Street and Speke Avenue, police Community Relations Liaison Officer, Constable Gwatidzo urged commuters to consider boadding transport at the Coppacabbana rank to avoid criminals terrorising people.
“We are urging touts at this rank (corner Speke Avenue and Leopold Takawira Street) to desist from joining hands with thieves.
“We are urging you to stop such criminal activities, allow pedestrians to cross without hindrances by loading your vehicles at the middle of the road.
“This is not a designated point and we are urging people to consider boarding vehicles at the Coppacabanna rank.
“A number of people have been losing their cellphones, handbags to thieves due to unnecessary traffic congestion at this area.
“Do not regret when police descends on you.
“Allow people to cross freely without blocking the Zebra Crossing area,” said Cst Gwatidzo.
